Greetings everyone. In an effort to spread the word about some of the eclectic Christian artists that populate my MP3 player, I have commandeered the BCC site. Why? Because a) I think there are a lot of gems out there in the God-fearing music world and, b) I possess all the log-in credentials and you do not.

So here we go, this edition’s artist spotlight:

Theocracy

What better way to ring in the joyous Christmas season than with…some awesome progressive metal!

For this installment of DJDFFJTs I bring you my favorite Christian metal band currently out there rupturing eardrums: Theocracy. This Atlanta-based, three-man outfit produces sweeping, epic technical metal masterpieces, supported by lyrics that don’t shy away from the Christian message and delivered in clean, understandable vocals. There’s no growling here, just dazzling guitar shreds and complex, exhilirating musical arrangements.

These guys have put out two albums so far, their self-titled debut and Mirror of Souls, one of the greatest metal discs ever pressed–Christian or otherwise. The album is built around the titular centerpiece, a 22-minute face-melting concept piece about a man who comes face to face with the defections of his soul:

I have seen my soul in the mirror
And it has broken me
I have seen myself so much clearer
Than I had ever seen
“Can’t you take away all this sickness
from my soul and set me free?
You can save me…I believe”
And then he said, “Arise, my child
our faith has made you reconciled
Now gaze into the Mirror once again”
We walked together through the door
And I looked in the glass once more
But the only one reflected back was him
Somehow the only one in the mirror saw was him

Gazing in the Mirror of my Soul
Staring at the man who took my place
and made me whole
In the Mirror
The Mirror of my Soul

Fantastic stuff and all the songs on this album are just as great. Below is another cut and, in honor of the Yuletide season, Theocracy’s uique take on a Christmas favorite. Enjoy!
